Miracles Do Happen!
Reason 2. Two years ago, I was laying in a hospital bed. It was determined I was in pre-term labor, and the only way to slow down my contractions were to admit me in the hospital for mandatory bed rest and have "MAG" (magnesium sulfate) continuously following through my system via IV.
The doctors had injected me with a steroid to speed up the baby's lung development, in the event the baby was born early. This was not a guarantee, just hope that it would work. Well, as most of our readers already know, our Miracle Mia was ready to take on the world regardless of what the doctors were trying to prevent. When she came at 28 weeks, I just wanted to hear one thing. I wanted to hear her cry out, like the way all mothers want to hear. It's almost a sign of everything being okay.
I remember not hearing any sound the moment Mia entered the world. My heart nearly stopped. Then, we heard a little whimper. Not a cry, like the way I remember with our son. Just a small one, then a small cry. The happy tears came! Although, she was born weak, she had enough strength to reassure Mommy and Daddy, she was going to fight for her life. And that's all we wanted to know.
Reason 3. Mia was rushed to another room. There were no moments of cuddling afterwards. The NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Transport team were ready for her. The nurse wheeled me into the recovery room. Everything happened so quickly, it's difficult to remember all the details. I do remember the moment the transport team brought Mia over in her incubator. They kindly wanted to give us a chance to meet our little Miracle before rushing over to the Children's Hospital.
Her lungs were weak, so she was being ventilated. She was hooked up to all these wires and monitors, which I later called "noodles." They each served a life purpose: oxygen saturation, heartbeat, respiratory, etc.... Although fully enclosed in her life support incubator, I asked if I can hold her hand for a second. The transport staff could only imagine the hardship parents of preemies go through. So despite the hurried stop, they lifted open one of the small windows of the incubator. I was able to touch Miracle Mia's hand and assure her that we look forward to seeing her real soon, to stay strong, and I would do my best, too. Next came the Happy tears. It was a blessing to see her alive. In that moment, I didn't care if I was seeing our daughter for the first time through plastic walls. I was grateful to have the opportunity to welcome her into our lives.
Many Blessings....
