Positive News Thursday - Fresh Produce On Wheels

(AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)

Instead of hearing the oh-so familiar tunes of the ice cream truck (our Kiddos go running to the window! LOL), you'll hear:

"Nutritious, delicious. Brought right to you. We have green and red tomatoes, white and sweet potatoes. We have greens, corn on the cob and cabbage, too."

The nonprofit Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corp. has come up with many ingenious ideas to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes. One awesome idea is the "Peaches and Greens" Produce Truck. This truck, a mobile small market, brings affordable fresh fruits and vegetables to families on public assistance, home bound seniors and others who don't have the transportation to get to the grocery store in the suburbs.

In a town where there is 26 liquor stores to one grocery store that's twice as far to get to, it's difficult for families in Detroit to get fresh produce. Most of the town's corner stores offer little or no produce at all. Now, the "Peaches and Greens" Truck can deliver right to them.

How wonderful is this?!

We would love to see the "Peaches and Greens" truck come through our neighborhood. Our neighborhood doesn't fit the target market, but how great it would be to see the kids in the neighborhood excited over delicious red apples and strawberries instead of an ice cream push pop.

The "Peaches and Greens" truck and the community group involved are making a profound difference in the lives and health of Detroit's residents. And that makes it to the top of our Positive News list!

Many Blessings....

  2. Hello Hugo and Roxanne,

Now that is good news. To bad it is not available to everyone. Hope that it catches on all over the USA for everyone not just a few people. This is something that goes with this, we had it on our blog. Gardening plots that people can rent for growing a garden. This one has a twist to it.

If you want to read more about it this is a link to that post and it is done in our state. Maybe this will catch on as well. Go to:

  6. Hi Dan and Deanna,

Thanks so much for featuring our post on your blog. It's an honor!

We remember your great blog post on Gardening plots on vacant lots. That, too, is ingenious! Both are great ideas to add more fresh fruits and veggies onto our dinner plates.

Thanks so much for your comments and the feature.

    Many Blessings....

  8. Hi Roxanne and Hugo - there are lots of community type projects being developed here - grown your own, bringing the people together.

In fact one blueberry farm has been let down by its purchaser I think .. and just from the press comments on .. people have travelled 200 miles to pick their own .. and benefit from the bumper crop. The farm spreads over Exmoor.

So there are so many enterprising and people helping others at the moment - thank goodness .. and fresh fruit and veg are so important to all our health.

I love the ice cream van .. I've been going to do a story on them for ages .. that will spur me on .. especially as I've managed to work out the video bit! Did Hugo and Noa see the Red Arrows one? - you'll like the music too I think!

All the best .. love everyone's ideas to help themselves and help others ..
